What is EXMO?

EXMO (Exercise Motivation) is a practical framework designed to help people better understand their relationship with exercise and physical activity.

While many exercise programs focus on what people should do, EXMO focuses on understanding why people do—or don’t—engage in exercise in the first place. It recognises that lasting behaviour change is influenced by far more than knowledge, willpower, or motivation alone.

EXMO draws on psychological science to explore the factors that influence exercise participation, including motivation, confidence, habits, values, emotional responses, lifestyle demands, and perceived barriers to change. By developing a clearer understanding of these factors, people can make more informed decisions about how to approach physical activity in a way that is realistic, sustainable, and personally meaningful.

At Healthy Life Psychology, EXMO forms the foundation of two complementary services:

EXMO Compass Assessment

The EXMO Compass Assessment provides a structured evaluation of the psychological and behavioural factors influencing your exercise participation.

Using evidence-informed assessment tools and personalised feedback, the assessment helps identify your strengths, barriers, motivational drivers, and areas for growth. The result is a clearer understanding of your current exercise profile and practical recommendations to guide future action.

The assessment can be valuable for people who:

  • Struggle to maintain exercise routines
  • Frequently start and stop health programs
  • Feel stuck despite wanting to be more active
  • Want a deeper understanding of what supports or hinders their exercise behaviour
  • Are looking for a personalised roadmap for sustainable change

EXMO 1:1 Coaching

EXMO 1:1 Coaching provides individualised support for people working towards exercise and physical activity goals.

Coaching is informed by the insights gained through the EXMO Compass Assessment and focuses on translating understanding into action. Sessions are tailored to each person’s circumstances and may involve building motivation, overcoming barriers, developing sustainable habits, improving confidence, strengthening accountability, and creating practical strategies that fit within everyday life.

The goal is not simply to exercise more, but to develop a healthier and more sustainable relationship with physical activity over the long term.

A Different Approach to Exercise Change

Many people know exercise is important. The challenge is making it work consistently in the context of real life.

EXMO provides a psychologically informed approach that helps bridge the gap between intention and action, supporting meaningful and sustainable behaviour change rather than short-term motivation alone.
